Celebrex Application

Therapeutic action: Celebrex of Celecoxib is an Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by inhibiting the cyclooxigenase-2 thus inhibiting the production of prostoglandins the chemicals in the body that start the process of inflammation. There are several forms of cyclooxygenase like COX-1, COX-2 and COX-3. First generation anti-inflammatory drugs used to inhibit all three cyclooxygenases thus causing severe gastro-intestinal adverse effect(result of cox-1 inhibition). Celebrexon the other hand is a selective COX-2 inhibitor its affinity to cyclooxygenase -2 is 7.6 times grater then to COX-1. Celebrex unlike other NSAIDS also does not interfere with blood clotting.

Indications: Celecoxib the active ingredient of Celebrex is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (swelling of lining in joints)
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis(spinal arthritis)
  • Osteoarthritis (ruptures in lining in joints)
  • Acute pain
  • Menstrual cramps and periodical menstrual pain (Algomenorrhea)
  • Colonic polyps(large intestine polyps)
  • Rectal polyps (adenomatous Polyposis)

Any other uses for Celebrex should be discussed with your health care provider.

Contradictions and cautions: When using all of the NSAIDS be sure to check your heart and blood circulation conditions due to increased possibility of heart related problems when using any NSAID's. Long-term treatment with Celebrex may lead to increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. If you are planning on having any heart related surgery(coronary bypass) do not use Celebrex. Long-term use may also alter the functions of the gastro-intestinal tract and may result in bleeding and even perforation of the stomach. In older people the possibility of these side effects rise exponentially. Be sure not to use Celebrex if you have ever experienced hypersensitivity or an allergic reaction to any NSAID,s or consult your doctor before using this drug. If any of the following disorders imply to you then you should not use Celecoxib or consult your doctor for change in dosage:

  • Heart related disorders of any origin
  • Stomach and intestine disorders
  • Liver or kidney dysfucntions
  • Epilepsy or other disorders that are accompanied by seizures
  • Asthma
  • Hemophilia or other blood clotting disorders
  • Nose Polyps

Celecoxib is in pregnancy category C meaning that during studies it was proven that it can be harmful to an unborn baby. If you are planning pregnancy or are pregnant talk to your doctor befor using Celebrex. The drug was proven to cause birth defects in the last trimester of pregnancy. Celebrex also passes into breast milk and may affect the newborn.
Alcohol should not be mixed with Celebrex due to possible elevated risk of gastro-intestinal bleeding. Avoid direct sunlight or sunbathing because Celebrex can increase the sensitivity of skin.

Side-effects: If any of the side-effects are stated here that does not necessarily mean that you may experience them. If an allergic reaction like swelling, redness, hives starts to develop after you use Celebrex get emergency medical help. If the following conditions apply to stop using Celebrex immediately:

  • Heart related problems:Weakness, pain in the chest, eye problems or balance problems
  • Gastro-intestinel dysfunction: Bloody stool or vomiting
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Liver dysfunction: jaundice, dizziness, loss of appetite, stomach pain, dark urine, white stool
  • Allergic reactions: rashes, fever, soar throat, skin peeling
  • Muscle weakness and pain, bruising or numbness

Some common side effects that may go away on there own are:

  • Diarrhea
  • Gasses
  • Ringing in ears
  • Headache and nervousness
  • Rashes and itching
  • Blurred vision

If the side effects listed above do not go away consult you health care provider.

Interactions: Be sure to mention to your doctor all the medicine and supplements(vitamins, bioactive substances) that you are taking before starting a course of Celebrex. Especially mention the following groups of drugs:

  • Blood thinners
  • Blood pressure medications
  • Ace inhibitors
  • Diuretics
  • Lithium supplements
  • Antimycotic drugs
  • Other NSAID's
  • Antidepressants
